Case Study.

MIND OVER MATTER.

In September 2006 I had a fall from a low-level roof (2 meters), resulting in the following injuries.

Head downwards:

• Double fracture of the skull (front)
• Fractured cheekbone (left side)
• Broken nose.
• Ruptured stomach
• Haematoma in lower stomach
• 4 fractures of the pelvis (Left side)

After being in traction for 34 days (flat on my back), I was given Physiotherapy at the hospital.

This lasted for 11 days, after which I was told I would never be able to walk again unaided. (Mind over Matter).

I took myself off to a private Physio, who said she would have a go at getting me walking again unaided.

It started with 3 visits per week for the first 2 years.

Then 2 visits for a further 1 year.

Followed by another 2 years of once a week.

After a couple of years, I used a Reflexologist, once a week for about 4 years.

The result is I play Badminton once a week.

Go to the Gym 4 mornings a week.

I also belong to the U3A. and am a member of 2 walking groups.

So much for NOT taking the results as fact.

My Reflexologist eventually retired; – so I went back to the Physio, then, after a year or two, I found a new Reflex Spa.

This is where I sill go whenever I feel I could do with some extra help.

Footnote.

My age when I had the accident was 70.

I am now 82. and still walking unaided.

There may be snow on the roof, but the fire has not yet gone out for life.(roll on summer UK)!

My clinic has changed location – instead of renting a room in a ‘Beauty Therapy Practice’  – referrals all the time –“ as one worked on the beauty on the outside, I worked on ‘their health & beauty from inside-out!”

 I now rent a room in a massaging clinic ….and let’s be honest… if you want a massage, not many people can talk you into a non-confronting reflexology treatment!…especially if they don’t know what it is!

So In January this year, I was surprised when an English gentleman was waiting to see “the reflexologist” rather than walking in to book a kinesiology, therapeutic or chiropractic massage at our clinic.  This was the second day he had come back, determined to talk to me!

Rodney was holidaying in Terrigal and had problems with pain & swelling in his feet.

 

When I asked him why he had sort ‘a reflexologist’ he explained….

He’d worked in construction and 12 years ago had a debilitating fall… fractured, broke, punctured, crushed, perforated, dislocated … various bones & and organs in his body – lucky to survive; and was told he would never walk again.

“It was a physiotherapist and reflexologist (the later working on me for 5 years) that got me up and mobile, and travelling the world for the last 8 years!

“When something goes wrong with me now – I just find a reflexologist!”

Rodney left the clinic, ready for his flight home, pain-free, grateful that swelling had now subsided.

Accredited as an Advanced Practitioner in 2007, my study and Professional Development led me to discover Lone Sorensen, a scientist in Spain, who had cancer on two occasions, underwent serious operations removing substantial parts of her anatomy while dealing with this disease and is now the Director / Founder an Internationally recognized Reflexology Institution located in Barcelona. She is beaming with good health!

I studied under her. She remains my mentor, confident and continuing educator, as her research is scientifically founded, proven and current.

In the process of researching and developing ‘The Sorensisten’, Lone met, who she refers to, “diamonds” around the world, who are specialists in ‘Reflex Therapy’ methods. She travelled to South America, China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan etc learning form the best and perfecting her reflexology understanding, application and perfection of techniques and skills, from a variety of cultures. All of these countries own an ancient system of treating illness, discomfort, and diseases that are being recognized & resurrected in some, never lost in others, to help people heal and remain healthy.

Reflexologists work on small maps found on the body, The Practitioner uses their hands to apply pressure that is comfortable for the client. It is non-invasive. All you need to do is remove your shoes …… and if that is a problem we work on other little maps, depicting the body, on your hands and face. I’ve always believed in ‘ magic’! This is the best kind there is!!

Lone is developing her own unique system of treatment through a combination of all that has been learnt and passed down through generations. She now teaches her ‘sisten’, leads Conferences, sharing undeniable findings and successes, in over 47 countries around the world. I am lucky enough to be one of her students.

Having retired from teaching almost 2 years ago, people often greet me on the street

”…So what are you up to now?”
Reply; ‘I’m running my own business – I’m a Reflexologist”
“Oh! Really?”
“Have you ever had reflexology?’
“No…”
’Do you know what it is?
“No….” or “…. It’s got something to do with the feet…..hasn’t it?”

That’s where my understanding began; back in the 70’s. Fascinated, when strolling through China Town, and seeing dilapidated charts on display, showing different parts of the body on the soles of feet…. I was intrigued! I bought books on ‘Self-Help Reflexology’ and was hooked… just like a ‘gym junkie’!

A few decades later, my Father-In-Law suffered a stroke. At 87, he was one of the fittest guys I knew. We were devastated. “Massive!” the doctor said, “It would have wiped out a lesser man”.

Pop couldn’t walk, couldn’t talk and lost many other physical functions. He was left to communicate by opening and closing his eyes. He survived for 18 months trying to learn how to do things again.

During one of our visits, I offered to work on his feet. His eyes lit up! He loved it. His feet didn’t get out of socks and slippers. During ‘one pampering’ session, I felt something completely different on the ball of his foot. “Something’s wrong Pop! I don’t know what it is, but I’m going to go home to look up my books!”

I rang the hospital the next day and requested a chest X-ray, just to satisfy us that there was nothing wrong. He had pneumonia and “we would have lost him” if they hadn’t administered antibiotics when they did!

“That’s it! I’m finding out more about this!”…… and so began my journey to becoming an Advanced Reflexologist/ Certified Natural Therapist Practitioner.
